Anita Ekberg

Marianne Ekberg (Swedish pronunciation (listen) 29 September 1931 - 11 January
2015) was a Swedish actress active in American and European film, well-known
for her beautiful and striking appearance. She gained notoriety for her role as
Sylvia in the Federico Fellini film La Dolce Vita (1960). Ekberg was born in
Sweden on 29 September 1931. She was the sixth child of eight. When she was in
her teens, Anita worked as a fashion model. Ekberg participated in the Miss
Malmo competition in 1950 following the advice of her mother. She took home the
Miss Sweden contest. Even though she spoke little English Ekberg traveled to
America to compete for the Miss Universe 1951 title. It was an official pageant
in the year 1951. The pageant was made officially recognized in 1952. Although
Ekberg didn't win the Miss Universe pageant, as one of six contestants, she was
able to sign the title of a starlet with Universal Studios. As a starlet at
Universal she received training in drama, elocution, horses, dancing and
fencing. She did a brief appearance in The Mississippi Gambler (1953), Abbott
and Costello go to Mars (1953), Take Me to Town (1953) as well as The Golden
Blade (53).
