Mary McDonnell

Mary McDonnell is an actress who has been nominated for two Oscars(r). She is well-known for her portrayals of characters from both contemporary and period screen roles. Mary Eileen McDonnell is a Pennsylvania-born actress. She was the child of Eileen (Mundy) the American computer consultant from Ireland, and John McDonnell. She was born in Ithaca and graduated from Fredonia State University of New York. After that, she went to drama school and was admitted to the famous Long Wharf Theatre Company on the East Coast. At the age of 22, she was when she was offered her breakthrough movie role in Dances with Wolves (1990) in which she played "Stands with a Fist", a Sioux Indian woman who was white. For the role, she earned her first Academy Award nomination. McDonnell has starred in the Lawrence Kasdan films Grand Canyon (1991), and Mumford (1999) alongside such veteran actors like Robert Redford as well as Sidney Poitier. She also was a part of Roland Emmerich's Independence Day (1996), featuring Will Smith. Margin Call (2011) that was against Kevin Spacey, earned McDonnell the Robert Altman award at the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards. McDonnell played a prominent role in the Syfy Network's award winning series Battlestar Galactica (2004), in which she was praised for her performance as President Laura Roslin. She garnered an Emmy nomination for her frequent guest role on the television show ER (1994). The wildly popular TNT drama Major Crimes (2012) stars her as Captain Sharon Raydor. It is McDonnell's second season and she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy(r). The character she played as an actress with paraplegia in soap opera in John Sayles' critically acclaimed film Passion Fish (1992) earned her an Best Actress Academy Award (r) nomination as well as an Academy Award nomination. Golden Globe nod.
