Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting social activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who was a social sassy and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and raised. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historic civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summers and was later in awe of the idea to film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was still in college. She began her career working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to observe the house of a member of the jury, and then look through their trash. When she was dissatisfied with journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist at a small production studio right out of school. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
